Acute mountain sickness (AMS)

Home » Info » Acute mountain sickness (AMS)

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a significant concern for climbers ascending Mount Kilimanjaro due to the rapid increase in altitude. AMS is a condition caused by the body’s inability to adapt to the decreased oxygen levels at higher elevations. Symptoms of AMS typically include headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping.

Mount Kilimanjaro’s altitude, which exceeds 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) at its summit, poses a risk of AMS for climbers ascending too quickly without proper acclimatization. To minimize the risk of AMS, climbers should follow several precautionary measures:

  1.  Gradual ascent: Opt for longer routes, such as the Lemosho or Northern Circuit routes, which allow for gradual acclimatization. Avoid rapid ascents that increase the risk of AMS.
  2.  Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and aid in acclimatization. Aim for 3-4 liters of water per day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  3. Altitude medication: Consider taking acetazolamide (Diamox) as a preventive measure against AMS. Consult with a healthcare professional before starting any medication and follow their recommendations.
  4. Rest and recovery: Take frequent rest breaks during the ascent to allow your body to adjust to the altitude. Avoid overexertion and prioritize adequate rest to prevent fatigue.
  5.  Monitor symptoms: Be vigilant for symptoms of AMS, especially headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Communicate any symptoms to your guide immediately, as early recognition is crucial for managing AMS.
  6.  Descend if necessary: If symptoms of AMS worsen or if you develop severe altitude sickness, descend to lower elevations immediately. Descending is the most effective treatment for AMS and can prevent serious complications.
  7.  Follow guide’s advice: Listen to the instructions of your guide and follow their recommendations regarding pacing, rest breaks, and acclimatization. Guides are trained to assess risks and ensure the safety of climbers.

AMS can affect climbers of all fitness levels, so it’s essential to be aware of the symptoms and take preventive measures to mitigate the risk. With proper preparation, gradual ascent, and attentive monitoring, climbers can increase their chances of a safe and successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro while minimizing the risk of AMS.
